Life at Arch Suits Four-Time Intern

Life at Arch

OK, you’ve heard this before: If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.

Yeah, yeah. It’s a cliché. But it’s also true.

Just ask Turiq Bruce, an actuarial assistant based in Arch’s White Plains, New York, office.

Bruce had — not one, not two, not three — four internships with Arch before transitioning into his full-time role in January 2025.

“I kept coming back because I liked that I could forge my own path here,” Bruce says. “I liked that I was thrown into the fire, no matter where I was. I had a lot of learning opportunities, and all the people I met everywhere I worked at Arch never wanted anything less than my personal and professional development to keep going in an upward trajectory. Everyone was nice and genuine, and it created a welcome atmosphere.”

Transformative Internships

Bruce’s Arch story began at Florida A&M University (FAMU) in his hometown, Tallahassee, where he was on a pre-med track and earned a bachelor’s degree in biology. But it never felt quite right.

“I wanted to be a doctor when I first went to school, but toward the end, after getting my biology degree, I made an executive decision to switch over to actuarial,” Bruce says. “I ended up talking to an alum from my university, and he let me know about the Agents of Transformation internship program in its inaugural year. That paved the way for me to be introduced to Arch.”

Bruce applied, and he excelled in the program. Pauline Dowling, Director of AMS Learning Solutions, introduced him to Clint Parker, Assistant Vice President, Casualty and Arch Warranty and Lender Service Operations, for his second internship.

Once again, Bruce excelled.

“I had an internship with Arch Advantage doing statistical reporting, digital and data ops and underwriting assistance,” Bruce says. “It was a rotation internship created for me, just so I could have some experience in a couple of different areas. After that, Parker ended up talking to a couple of people on the Actuarial team at Arch Insurance, and I got an interview. I interned in Actuarial starting in the fall of 2023 all the way through the summer of 2024. During that summer, I split my time working with the Actuarial group at Arch Capital Services. And now that’s where I am.”

During his internships, Bruce went back to school at FAMU for more math, along with some business and finance-related coursework, and he eventually earned an actuarial science degree.

Office Life

Bruce worked remotely for much of his internship time, but when he was hired full-time at Arch, he moved to White Plains.

“There was no hesitation. This was what I wanted to do,” Bruce says. “Moving up here opens the door for more opportunity. And I like getting outside of my comfort zone. I’m in a new place, but I’m able to really focus here.”

Bruce found an apartment in New Rochelle, a community about 25 minutes from the office.

“Honestly, I’m hardly ever there,” Bruce says. “People in the office joke that I should expense a bed and sleep here. But I just like to be at work. My desk is next to the Legal and Sustainability teams, and they’re pretty lively. There’s a good spark on days that they’re in the office.”

Although he still learns things every day, the job is what Bruce expected.

“The transition wasn’t hard at all,” he says. “The only thing that’s really different is that as an intern, there were some limits on my time. But as a full-time employee, there’s more responsibility and things that have to get done. I’ve liked being able to invest more hours in the work. There are times it’s very busy, and you have to push out work that’s sent to executives. That’s actually a lot of fun.”

The more Bruce proves himself, the more he builds trust.

“What I like most is I don’t have to ask for anything more challenging or new to work on,” he says. “As long as I have capacity, I’ll get things to do that give me exposure to something I never knew existed or something I’ve been curious about.”

Outside of the office, Bruce likes to read and he’s a bowler with a 150 average. He started bowling seriously in college. There are lanes on campus near the library, and bowling became an escape during study breaks.

“You know, I haven’t been bowling since I moved up here,” Bruce says, “which is crazy, because I went out and bought a bowling ball so I wouldn’t have to use house balls. I’ve seen a couple of bowling alleys around here, and I’m sure I’ll get back into it. It’s a good way to relax and recharge.”

The only thing Bruce is uncertain about at this stage of his young career is the weather. Although his official start date was New Year’s Day, he didn’t move to White Plains until March 14.

“I missed the winter,” he says. “Although the Tuesday I was here in January, looking for a place to live, it was 8 degrees. That was a pretty big shocker compared to Florida. We’ll see how my first winter in New York goes.”

Bruce is something of an expert on Arch internships. His advice to prospective interns is simple:

“Never say no to opportunity,” he says, “and give it your all when you get your foot in the door.”

And if you end up loving it, you’ll never work a day in your life.
